Strategic Blog Topics for Wedding & Elopement Photographers (and What to Do If They’re Not Ranking)
If you’re a wedding or elopement photographer, blogging is one of the most powerful ways to bring in dream clients. Why? Because couples are literally Googling the exact stuff you could be writing about—venues, locations, planning tips, real wedding inspo. When you show up for those searches, you get more eyes on your work and inquiries in your inbox.
But not all blogs are created equal. It’s not enough to slap some pretty photos on your website and call it a day. If you want your blogs to actually work for you, you’ve gotta be strategic. Let’s dive into the best types of blogs to write, and what to do if you’ve already written some but they’re sitting sad and lonely on page 7 of Google.
Blog Topics That Work for Photographers
Venue Guides
Think: “The Best Colorado Mountain Wedding Venues” or “How to Get Married at X Venue”. Couples are always searching for the perfect place to get married or elope first. Venue guides position you as the expert and get you in front of couples before they even book a photographer.
Real Weddings & Elopements
Blog your galleries strategically! Share the couple’s story (but don’t go too crazy on this part), what made their day unique, and planning details that will inspire future clients. These blogs are perfect for ranking for specific venues, seasons, or styles of weddings.
Elopement + Planning Guides
“How to Elope in Iceland,” “The Ultimate Guide to Eloping at Yosemite National Park,” & “Everything You Need to Know About Planning a Micro Wedding in Montana,” etc. These are evergreen posts packed with value that can bring you traffic for years.
Location-Specific Tips
Think smaller scale than a full guide. Example: “Best Time of Year to Elope at Lake Como” or “Top 5 Spots for Photos in Big Sur.” These posts attract couples who already know where they want to be, and they need your expertise to nail down the details. Make sure to internally link these to your larger location guides! :)
Planning Advice Blogs
Help couples figure out their day with blogs like “How to Create a Timeline for Your Elopement” or “Tips for Having an Intentional Wedding with Less Stress.” And while these blogs may not rank on Google, they are a great resource to point your couples to, or for people to come across as they browse your site and blogs! Show that you know your work inside and out!
Okay But… What If You’ve Already Written Blogs and They’re Flopping?
First off, if you’ve been relying on copy-pasted AI blogs without adding your own insights, personality, or photos… I SEE YOU. 👀 And Google sees you too. And while AI-generated blogs aren’t punished by Google, crappy, basic content DEFINITELY is.
Here’s how to revive old blogs and give them a fighting chance:
Update outdated info + dates. If your blog says “Best Places to Elope in 2021,” or “How to Elope in Oregon 2023,” it is time to update it. Also any pricing information, permit details - make sure these things are all up to date!
Look at the competition. What are the top-ranking blogs covering that you didn’t? Fill the gaps with your expertise.
Swap out images. Showcase fresh, relevant work and make sure your file names + alt text are optimized. I know your style evolves, and may look quite different to what your images reflect in those blogs written a couple years ago!
Add internal links. Connect blogs together so readers (and Google) stay on your site longer.
Resubmit to Google Search Console. Once you’ve updated, let Google know so it crawls the new version.
Don’t Just Blog… Share Your Blogs!
I won’t lie to you, blogging IS getting more competitive. A lot of photography biz coaches are teaching about blogs (and ads) these days! So there are definitely more photographers blogging (yay!) and more ads on Google pushing organic results lower (boo). That means you need to find extra ways to keep your content visible.
Pin them on Pinterest. Pinterest is a visual search engine where couples are actively planning their weddings. Create multiple pins for each blog to keep traffic flowing. And if you’re not sure where to start with Pinterest, get my free Pin to Win guide that will walk you through EXACTLY what you need to do! Also, it is definitely not one of those fluffy freebies, it is packed with ACTIONABLE tips and strategies!!
Talk about them on Instagram. Share snippets, tips, and photos from your blogs in posts and stories.
Repurpose everywhere. Email newsletter, vendor shoutouts, heck—even TikTok if that’s your vibe.
Even If You Never Hit Page 1… Blogs Are Still Worth It
Listen, not every blog will get to page 1 of Google, but that’s okay. Blogging still does SO much for your business:
Builds trust by showing off your knowledge + personality
Gives your dream clients a way to connect with your stories and values
Strengthens your website SEO overall, helping all your pages rank better
Provides content you can repurpose across Pinterest, IG, and newsletters
Positions you as the go-to expert in your location or niche
Blogging is still one of the best tools you have to attract aligned clients and grow your business in a sustainable way. But you’ve gotta be strategic, intentional, and willing to keep tweaking things until they work.
